Mobile Laboratory for Aerosol Study

MLAS (Mobile Laboratory for Aerosol Study) was designed and developed during an international cooperation between University of Isfahan (UI), Iran, and Max-Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC), Germany, for studying aerosol particles in one of the most polluted cities in the world, the greater Isfahan. The joint cooperation of UI and MPIC has been initiated since 2004 and several joint studies mainly focused on the air pollution research have been implemented during that. MLAS was developed based on the lack of reliable and available cited research on air pollution concentrations in Iran metropolises. It contains a new combination of various particle counting instruments designed by MPIC to examine particle size distribution as well as particle number concentration with size ranges 2nm to 15 microns. MLAS has equipped also by a cascade impactor to sample local urban particulate matter for further multi-elemental analysis. A meteorological station which was designed by UI scientists also provides all the required meteorological factors simultaneously. An integrated software was developed by MLAS team to registered all data and send through the web online. MLAS is supplied by a mobile power generator, whereby it has now an almost full package of instruments to study the local particulate matter in any places.

MLAS Scope

MLAS was designed based on lack of state-of-art instruments in aerosol studies in Iran metropolises. It is utilized in researches mainly focused on aerosol propagation through the urban areas, aerosol inventory, aerosol impacts on human health and public hygiene, aerosol characterization, etc. MLAS is developed by MLAS team and will be used by them just for environmental problems. The obtained results will be analyzed during the first step of air pollution management and control program of the greater Isfahan.
